An orangutan stole my canoe is a collection of poetry written with the greatest reverence for the way language can sound. It is a reflection of fate, and which plans amount to something, nature’s obstacles, history’s memory, the myth of the greatest books never written. The poetry itself delves into the darkest and funniest places Naomi Parkyn has known, seen glimpses of or heard stifled and expressed by the human mind because some of the mostsly and cleverly conceited language is found in the construction of excuses. Naomi Parkyn believes in literature as a form of prayer or play; using words to discover, explain, explore, rationalise, reduce or engage with the world. For her, writing was something she wanted very early on and decided she would never have the courage or recklessness for. It is a fair assessment of her now own character: less sensible and slightly more courageous.
