Mac's Happy Landing

Delmer is an apple of the Delicious variety in the Perry Farm orchard. Welcoming new apples is one of his favorite moments. When Delmer greets a newly born McIntosh apple, the frightened little apple manages a feeble “H-hello.”

The next day Delmer tells his new friend that he needs a name, and he names him Mac. Mac has many questions: How did I get high up in this tree? What about food, Delmer? How will I stay alive? Will I grow as big as you? Delmer answers all Mac's questions and much more.

Mac learns all about honey bees and the important role they play in producing an apple, and about the sun's part in supplying the apples with chlorophyll so they will be green and healthy. Each day Delmer shares new wonders with Mac.

When the chill of autumn visits the Perry farm, the apples become restless. They know they have a future beyond just hanging in the trees, and they take turns sharing their dreams. Mac listens quietly. Then he remembers what Delmer had told him about purpose and that one day he would discover what his purpose was.
