The fifteen-second pause simulated his turn to speak. He had almost reached his average sitting time of eighteen minutes. #4 The unboxed fox and I were still reading when the landline interrupted. I tried ignoring it, but I didn’t own an answering machine and my caller had limitless patience. After listening to about a dozen rings, I went inside and picked up the downstairs phone, leaving the door open so I could keep an eye on Fox.
